This colorful, hand-painted, wooden shutter from Rajasthan (the largest state of the Republic of India) can be used to fill an empty space on your wall; or, with its hinged panels and metal latch, it can be hung over a small window to serve as a fully functional indoor shutter that can be kept closed for privacy or opened to let light in. Either way, this authentic architectural element — dating from the mid-20th century — will bring the true flavor of India into your living space.

The hinged panels in the center depict two Hindu women dressed in traditional saris, with their arms extended in a dancer's pose and performing mudras (symbolic or ritual hand gestures in Hinduism and Buddhism).

Note also that their hands and feet are decorated with red henna designs.

Above the panels are drawings of two green parrots, which in some parts of India are a symbol of fertility and so represent conjugal happiness. Two white cranes (which often symbolize longevity and immortality in Asian culture) are depicted below the hinged panels.

Note: As this item was once part of a genuine Rajasthani dwelling in India, there is some normal wear to the finish, along with miscellaneous scratches, nicks, and dings due to age and use. However, the overall condition is good.
